Thematic Thursdays: I Joined the Kinky Curly Committee

I’m not married to one look. I had cornrows, a weave, a wrap and the wet look all in the month of January. What I am devoted to is a solution for dry scalp. It is the worst feeling to have your hair “so fresh and so clean” and then part it down the middle only to find a bed of snow fit for Santa’s elves.

So, I did some research. First, I looked up every ingredient in the shampoos that I use to see what exactly they were. I started with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), which are the chemicals that make the lather that we love so much. I learned about their dangers when my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and I went on a rampage changing toothpastes and soaps. Apparently, they also suck when it comes to dandruff. Stay away from it.

While I switched to Dr. Bronner’s Soap/Shampoo, threw out the Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Cream and got an SLS-free toothpaste, I failed to check my other conditioner. Creme of Nature contains all sorts of dandruff-causing parabens (also parabens cause cancer, so stop letting them dip your feet in that shit at the nail shop).

I’ve tried other conditioners — one by JASON, tea-tree this or that from Whole Foods, etc. — none of them makes my hair as supple as Creme of Nature, but cancer and dandruff aren’t good tradeoffs. Off I went to find a good shampoo and conditioner that was free of all this crap and that worked. The best so far are Aveda Be Curly, Aveda Dry Remedy and Kinky Curly (Also, their Hair Custard is as good as people say it is. Trust me. The Kinky Curly Custard will keep your hair exactly like it is when it is wet).

My flakes have yet to reappear! Also, I did two rinses with Apple Cider Vinegar. I’ll let you know in a couple of weeks when I get it pressed, whether it retains its bounce and shine. The natural styles are working, though.

I was looking at Kinky curly at Target yesterday but I ended up getting the Curls line of stuff to check out.

Also check out Organix(I really love the Coconut Milk and the Shea Butter lines) and Renpure(I like the My Pretty hair is parched line) conditioners. No sulfates. And they smell soooo good.

I will definitely check those out. Especially if they are cheaper. Lol!
