Workin’ Wednesdays: Changes
I’m very excited about a new project that I’m working on. It’s three separate logos for one company and its subsidiaries. I’m not allowed to talk about them in detail, but I’ve been given permission to post them once complete. I plan to deliver them by next Wednesday. There are also convention booklets, e-blasts, and flyers in my queue. I hope I have enough time to soak in some rays this summer.
Equally exciting is the fact that after seventeen years of teaching dance in Los Angeles and Orange County, I’ll have a break. I’ll be leaving Lula Washington Dance Theatre after the recital on June 26th. This will give me more time to focus on other areas including chauffeuring Mooch to auditions and being on set.
My design business is doing almost as well as I’d like it to be (considering how tired I am), so perhaps I’ll get to take a couple of illustration and acting classes in the fall. You know. Things I want to do. I may even start a competition team. Who knows? I’m historically all over the place. My philosophy (especially after this) is to work on whatever I want to be working on right now.
Mooch has been out of school for the summer since last week. I’m homeschooling two kids now, which is super fun, though it still qualifies as work. I missed Mooch all year. She’s journaling now and wants to learn her multiplication tables as well. We’re becoming reacquainted and that’s nice.
I Know I Said Friday Was My Last Post, But …
With warm lentil soup, bread, great vibes, good people and a gang of children, our Kwanzaa celebration is off to a wonderful start. I know I said Friday was my last blog of the year, but today was the first gathering, and it was crunk! The children played, the adults caught up, we poured libations, lit the first candle, spoke about unity and then danced the night away. The best part is that we were done in time to get a good night of rest.
Tomorrow, we’re doing safety/earthquake planning and preparedness. The next day will be arts and crafts followed by two days of shows at Lula’s, Fuss’ birthday and a festive karamu on Saturday. I’ll be tired, but the smiles on the children’s faces make it all worth it. I’ll post the video tomorrow.

Tuesdays With Mooch: All I Want For Kwanzaa is My Two Front Teeth
Mooch lost one of her front teeth this past weekend. It’s so cute, but I can’t wait for her to lose the other.
Also, the show went well Saturday. I had so much fun dancing on stage with Mooch, and I hope to do it again really soon.
On another note, she’s working on etiquette, spirituality and self-esteem in rites of passage now, and it’s interesting to see that play out at the dinner table. She’ll smack and then remember to close her mouth. When she cuts someone off in conversation, she remembers mid-sentence that it’s inappropriate. The funny thing is that she mostly does the latter to us. I haven’t been to capoeira with her in weeks, because Hannibal takes her, but I theorize that she’s getting better.
They had a book festival at her school this weekend with games, prizes and a cakewalk. She didn’t win a cake, but I got her an armful of books, which she’s enjoying. Among the titles are James and the Giant Peach, Ivy and Bean and The Mouse and the Motorcycle. She loves to play Hangman, so I got her a book full of them. I hope she never stops writing her favorite Hangman puzzle on napkins in restaurants. I’ll give you a hint. It’s one word with four letters, and it starts with an ‘L.’
Workin’ Wednesdays: Update November
I was going to write a blog about writing a blog, but I figured that would be a little too meta for my Wednesday readers. So, I’ll briefly update you as such:
I’ve been editing footage for another person’s reel. I’ve also been designing t-shirts, logos and sippy cups (don’t ask).
I’m still teaching at LWDT and UCLA, and I will be performing with Mooch this Saturday evening in Granada Hills. Given that I’m getting a little more sleep, things should go well.
I’ve pretty much planned the meals and activities for our annual “Thanks But No Thanks” dinner and our Kwanzaa celebration. I’m excited about those and anxiously stashing money everywhere I can think of, because I’m paranoid about overspending.
That’s it for now.
Film Fridays: Dancers, The Robots are Coming For YOUR JOBS!

It’s not ‘Twon with his shirt tied up showing off his six pack at auditions or Chante busting that mean jazz walk with her layered bright clothing on. It’s DivaBot! This dynamic dancing device is just the first generation. When she perfects her mechanical moves, she may be dancing backup for Beyonce in a few years. It’s not that hard.
