Team Tabu Updates: A Change is Gonna Come

My favorite thing to report is that intimacy is back in full swing. Our anniversary always seems to provide that extra boost (even with Hannibal’s fear of re-breaking my ankle during coitus). With work and exhaustion at night, the mornings continue to be our most consistent time. We definitely connect a couple of times per week at night as well, but the daily morning cuddle is as crucial as family affirmations for us.

Unfortunately, we’ve received a lot of news in the past two weeks — news that means changes for the fame. Fortunately, my second favorite thing to report is that we’ve been through much worse, and we are confident we’ll get through all of this. We just aren’t thrilled about it, and that’s real. Change means work. The first year of marriage was a lot of work, and years two and three we got progressively closer. Year four we coasted on the work we had done — finding comfort in ritual, finishing each other’s sentences, shouting out punchlines simultaneously, and supporting each other the best way we could at the time.

This fifth year will require more of us. We will probably moving within the next three months. Again! I still have three more weeks in a cast. My father’s time is running out, which means paperwork, lawyers, wills, trusts, etc. Hannibal has been stressed at work for over a year, and he’s doing extra at home.

On the bright side, the kids are both much older and quite helpful. Mooch makes breakfast every single morning. Steel oats, eggs, waffles, pancakes, omelets and hashbrowns are all things she is capable of preparing. Fuss does her laundry, sweeps the floor, makes her own snacks and sandwiches, cleans the sink, wipes her table, and dresses herself now. For all of these things, we are very grateful.

We’re trying to stop saying we’re tired all of the time, especially in front of the kids. Fuss is starting to say it, too, and that’s not good. It’s true though. We’re exhausted. I hope to report better news soon.

Team Tabu Updates: New Homeschool Room!!

I’m sorry this is a list with pictures. Paragraphs about a room redecoration would be too boring and lengthy. If you have questions, do ask them in the comments section below.

1. I redid my classroom for the new year, and Fuss loves it. It’s my new favorite room in the house. It used to be a storage slash office slash classroom, and now it serves mostly one purpose — or at least it looks like it does.

2. This past Friday, I had an opportunity to have a girls night out. I went to Nola’s restaurant downtown, and had a taste of New Orleans. It was really good. Then I went to Kiss N’ Grind’s Pre-Grammy event. It was a much needed break from mommyhood.

3. Mooch is in a limit testing phase, which is not so fun. It isn’t a period of defiance, but she’s learning what is appropriate and not appropriate when addressing adults. Our home and her school are both places where she’s allowed to speak freely, and I think she’s let that go to her head — first disrespecting Hannibal in front of company Saturday night and then doing the same to me Sunday at my dad’s birthday dinner. These are those fun pre-teen times everyone has been talking about. Joy!

4. I bartered with a client so that Hannibal and I can have a date night to go to the Still Waters “Life is a Saxophone” event on Sunday, February 24th. That’s not exactly Black Love Day, but it’s as close as we can get.

Tuesdays With Mooch & Fuss: Old Costumes

Here are some pics of the girls Halloween costumes over the years. We’re in heavy prep mode around here, and there isn’t much time for blogging. I have a parade at one girl’s school Wednesday morning, and then I have to schlep to the other’s by 1:30pm. Things will be interesting, but they will definitely be fun.

Our costume method has always been they pick what they want to be, and then I design it.

Tuesdays With Mooch & Fuss: Weddings, Birthdays, and Laundry

I’ve been promising to capture a picture of Fuss doing her laundry without being asked. Yesterday I was cooking my birthday feast, and she came dragging her hamper in. Since I was preparing a new dish, I had my camera near by, so I snapped a couple of photos without distracting her. She’s been so amazing and helpful these last few weeks. She and the other flower girl, Kaia, did a fantastic job in the wedding this weekend. For more on homeschooling Fuss, please visit, Teaching Fuss.

Mooch shot a few pick up shots and recorded some voiceover for Candyland, which should be out in December. She wasn’t in the wedding, but I included a picture of what she wore. I wasn’t able to walk down the aisle with a giant Canon camera, so you’ll have to wait on the professional pictures for shots at the actual venue. This one is in my living room.

Mooch has been working on the science behind building at school. She and a partner are designing a castle from the future, and I can’t wait to see it. They’re also preparing for a 1920’s performance, where she’ll get to perform “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” She met with a coach last night for her November 11th celebrity gala, where she’ll perform a scene from Macbeth with Keith David.

It was also my birthday on Monday, October 15th, so you’ll see a couple of pictures from our tiny family celebration.
