Tuesdays With Mooch & Fuss: Organized Tantrums

So … yeah. Apparently, video takes up a lot of space on a hard drive. A lot! I’ll have to purchase another external hard drive, in addition to the two I’ve got, in order to save and edit anymore “Tuesdays With Mooch” episodes. Don’t frown. I’ll still write updates about her and show lots of pics. I should be getting a third hard drive by the end of the year, and she’ll be back up in January or February.
MOOCH
The Moochster is getting happier by the minute, and much more organized. I was really worried for a moment. You know, when your kid gets past age five, you become less interested in the parenting magazines, because you kinda feel like you’ve got it. The problem with that is that you DON’T have it. They are still changing developmentally — just not as rapidly. She was just going through a phase, which may actually return at eight-and-a-half. Joy.
Anyway, her latest interests include building things with screws, nuts, and bolts. I found a cheap set at Tuesday Morning, where you can build a motorcycle, go-cart, and airplane. We built the go-cart together last night. She liked sorting all of the parts to make sure she had everything, using the codes to figure out which pieces went where, and screwing on the “nutmegs” (as she jokingly called them).
I’m pretty certain that she hates ballet. She told me she almost fell asleep at the barre last week. Since SHE’S the one who asked for another year of it, I’m making her stick with it until Ballet 3. Then we can reevaluate. She’s actually very good at it, because of her attention to detail. My hope is that she’ll get over this tedious part and want to continue. Otherwise, it’s two years of tuition down the drain. Speaking of tuition, I found out that her art school offers scholarships, so that helps.
My favorite remnant of Rites of Passage is that Mooch cooks several nights per week. That is such a big help. We’re going to have to revisit hair washing, though. :-/

FUSS
Fuss is learning the sounds for “r, c and b.” Her focus lately has been on the globe, the sensory items — like shakers, bells, and rattles, and the locks and latches activity. She seems to enjoy figuring out how to open things, which is evidenced in her picking the locks and cracking the codes around the house (i.e. someone’s pad got hacked into). For more about homeschooling, click here.
The antibiotics have worked well on her tooth in my opinion. There is no more puss and she seems to be in way less pain. She still does weird stuff with her top lip (it’s also dry, though), and she still very cautious. Hopefully when she goes back in December, they won’t need to pull it. Although, I’ve researched some options in case they do.
She is much better about letting me do her hair now — depending on the style and the length of time it takes. I’m considering more oil, because she seems to be dry all over — hair, lips, face. She has a LOT of hair. A lot! We’re working on it.
Her interest in music is growing by the minute. She is able to name the artists of many songs just by listening to them. It’s kinda creepy. She also copies what Mooch does in ballet, makes up her own songs, and seems to have a non-stop soundtrack going in her head. The soundtrack is, of course, interlaced with her frequent chanting of “99%,” which she picked up listening to KPFK (Pacifica Radio) during our morning drive to drop Mooch off.
I’m mildly concerned with her tantrums. While they are brief, they are definitely frequent. The whining and tantrums are much more pronounced when Hannibal is around. Can you say, “Wrapped around her finger?” I’m happy that they have bonded well. He is definitely a baby wearer (like, with no carrier, though). She’s always in his arms.
Marital Mondays: How H&M Got Their Groove Back
We are workaholics — both of us. Hannibal and I did some serious marital focusing this week — showering together, lots of pillow talk, sex, and even a date night Saturday to eat overlooking the water (Awesome!) and watch The Rum Diary together (meh). This week was so much fun, I made a to-do list.
1. Write my will. (It’s a long story)
2. Establish a monthly date night.
3. Resume our cuddle time (at least 5 nights per week)
4. Start making New Years’ resolutions (I know I said that was stupid, but I’m
growing up, okay?)
5. More morning sex (if we can beat Fuss’ wake up time)
We interrupt this list for Hannibal’s shoulder surfing interjection:
H: You have a lot of sex on this list.
M: It’s not a lot. It just says “more morning sex.” I like morning sex.
H: Well, it’s 33%.
M: I’m pretty sure you failed math class. That’s not 33%.
H: Yes, it is.
M: I don’t care if it’s 99% as long as you occupy this coochie.
H: (laughing)
Anyway, back to my list.
6. Buy more candles.
7. Don’t go to the movies after 9pm.
8. Be more affection in FRONT of the kids.
9. Be nicer to each other in FRONT of the kids.
We interrupt this list for ANOTHER Hannibal’s shoulder surfing interjection:
H: Yeah, what’s up with that? Why are we only nice to each other after they go to bed?
M: I don’t know. We’re overworked, tired, and not making good choices.
H: Seems legit. We have to do better.
M: Yup. That’s why I’m making a to-do list. This is growth, baby!! Get some!
H: You’re a lot more pumped than you probably should be with post-nasal drip and all.
M: Anyway, back to my list. What should be #10? It has to be either big, profound, or funny.
H: So, it’s my penis!
M: You know what’s more profound than your penis?
H: What?
M: Deez Nuts!!
P.S.
M: Somebody is going to come to this site thinking I’m talking about the store, H&M, and they’re going to get a rude penile awakening.
H: Isn’t that the Julian Assange story?
Film Fridays: Schools Kill Creativity
Thematic Thursdays: My Vows – Revisited
Not “we have a song” like Alma and Cleophus getting misty about sharing their chaste first dance to a Cole Porter classic at the USO. Not “we love that song” like throwin’ dubs out the window and switchin’ lanes as bass pounds down the 105.
No, we are a song — a complex arrangement of notes, melody and harmony, strung together with creative tension and lyrical dexterity. A symphony of synchronicity, moving together towards a denouement of dreams and destiny.
Like any song, we’re not always performed perfectly. The rhythm gets jerky, words are misspoken, and sometimes we’re out of tune. But we keep returning to that familiar refrain, finding ourselves back in love again.
So today, we sing our song to the ones we love and the people who love us, today we’re sung in the eyes of our daughter and the ardent arms of relatives and friends. So today, I’ve come to say these things to you:
I promise to love you until the stars shatter and the firmament cracks asunder from the intensity of our passion.
I swear to keep communicating so I can stay in step with you, practicing the choreography, dancing like nobody’s looking. I’ll tell you what you want to hear *and* what you need to hear, and ask the same.
I give you my word that I give you my heart, without reservation and without limitation, pouring all that I am into all that you are and all we will become.
I pledge to find a differentiated balance between never letting you leave my side and being so busy that we’re always wondering when we’ll see each other again.
I vow to respect you like Aretha’s demands, honoring your wishes to the best of my ability, being that quiet rest between notes where you can be safe.
I will wake up every day — groggy or rested, bleary-eyed or cheery — dedicated to you like Art Laboe was calling our name.
I love you, Hannibal, and I’m gonna be your wife.
Workin’ Wednesdays: Comikaze

A guy knelt in the center of the LA Convention Center floor wearing a prisoner’s execution hood to promote is work. Just around the corner, Elvira posed with fans at what will be her last con not dressed as Cassandra Peterson. Stan Lee showed up, and so did Leslie Easterbrook, Ernest Borgnine, Mark Hamill and Morgan Fairchild.
For its convention debut, Comikaze Expo definitely booked great celebrities and showed Los Angeles a slew of talented artists and writers. The cosplay was diverse, representing many genres from gaming (Sonic the Hedgehog) to horror (Pyramid Head, Silent Hill), and steam punk was in the building! There were several steam punk panels and nearly six steam punk vendors.
I held down a booth slanging “Nerdy at the Roots” t-shirts for Komplicated.com. It was my first convention of this type also. It was well attended, but not as crowded as I’ve heard Comic Con described. I could at least move around without touching people. It was a little disorganized, though. Line management for celebrity photo-ops could have been handled better and I’m pretty sure forty percent of the crowd walked in without wristbands or payment. Comikaze didn’t print floor maps, panel schedules or exhibitor lists. Unless attendees downloaded them from the website, they were stuck wandering from panel to panel reading the fine print pasted onto poster boards.
Speaking of panels, they were only enclosed by pipe and drape, so actually hearing the panel over the loud roar of the convention was next to impossible. If they couldn’t be found and couldn’t be heard, they might as well not have been at all.
The food was terrible and very expensive, but better food was within walking distance. Overall, I had a great time promoting Komplicated and buying little knick knacks. Comikaze will likely be an awesome experience next year when the kinks are worked out.
