MOOCH

Mooch is making great social and emotional strides since we implemented monthly family goals (last month: “Look for the great things” and this month “Random words of kindness”). She received her school assessment (like a report card but in essay format) yesterday, and at school she is showing improvement in conflict resolution, speaking up for herself, and complimenting others when they are pleasurable. She and her friends design clothes out of scraps from the art teacher and have little fashion shows. I’m so excited that a parent/teacher conference could turn our whole family around.

She enjoyed her Shakespeare class a great deal this past Saturday. She’s been walking around the house spouting out such phrases as, “Uneasy rests the head that wears a crown” and “The cry did knock against my very heart.” She’s been practicing her keyboard religiously since last Tuesday, so we’ll see how that class goes today. It seems as though she is still warming up to the voice class.

FUSS

Fuss has been under the weather for the better part of this week. She’s like a mucus fountain. She doesn’t like chlorophyll or apple cider vinegar, which are both go-to remedies for our family. Today, I kicked it old school and made her some lemon and honey. She went for it, so I slipped some fresh garlic (a natural antibiotic) into it. Then I steamed up the bathroom and gave her a warm bath, followed by a eucalyptus rub down. She’s napping now with her head and chest propped up at a forty degree angle. Poor thing.

I’m a little outdone, because I chopped up a bunch of spinach and stirred it into some orzo that I’d prepared, hoping she would eat a little something. She wasn’t interested. Well, I’ll add some diced fresh tomatoes and serve the dish for dinner. No biggie, I guess.

She spent most of the morning in her remodeled book nook. We did circle time, and then she just wanted to hear serial stories — What Makes a Rainbow, Go, Dog. Go!, Shades of Black, and Who Says Moo? I ordered a spice rack to present several books at a time facing forward. Check it out below. I got the idea from Pinterest, where a user had placed Ikea spice racks on the wall as book shelves, but Ikea was out of them. I can’t wait until theirs are in stock, though, because mine has a book height limitation on rows two and three.

Marital Mondays: Attention!

M: I think you stole my green headphones, and you’re using them in secret when I’m not here.

H: Myshell, that is a random accusation not based in any fact, and I don’t appreciate it.

M: So. I want my headphones. They’re cute, and they cover up my whole ears like Beats By Dre — except they’re not Beats By Dre.

H: I’m sorry that you can’t find your headphones, but I’m trying to work right now. I will gladly help you look for them at a later time.

M: I love you.

H: I love you, too.

(Pause)

M: Hannibal?

H: (Removing headphone from one ear) You’re talking to me again. Yes, honey?

M: What do you think of Mitt Romney?

H: You want to discuss politics now?

M: Yeah.

H: Myshell, I have six articles to write.

M: I know, but I thought you’d enjoy some useless chatter.

H: Why on earth (pause) You did all this for fun, because you thought I’d enjoy it? *confused face*

M: I need some attention.

H: You skipped cuddle time tonight, because you said I should get straight to work.

M: I know. I regret that now. Are there any things in life that you regret, Hannibal?

H: (Launching into conversation) Actually, back at ‘SC, I … Wait are you tricking me into pointless conversation again?

M: Kinda.

H: Myshell, do want me to just come over there and do like a belated cuddle time with you.

M: Yup. (under breath) I want you to find my damn headphones, too.

Thematic Thursdays: Texas Caviar

I know I said I’d never do this, but I have to share this recipe with ya’ll. I’m addicted to it. My mother used to make it for me when I’d drop by after I became a vegan. I didn’t know her recipe, but this is pretty darn close to it (hers didn’t have black beans in it).

Note: I use sprouted beans, but you’re welcome to use canned organic, or cook some and let them cool.

Ingredients
1/2 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 bunch green onions, chopped
2 jalapeno peppers, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered
1 (8 ounce) bottle zesty Italian dressing
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can black-eyed peas, drained
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1 bunch chopped fresh cilantro

Directions
1. In a large bowl, mix together onion, green bell pepper, green onions, jalapeno peppers, garlic, cherry tomatoes, zesty Italian dressing, black beans, black-eyed peas and coriander. Cover and chill in the refrigerator approximately 2 hours. Toss with desired amount of fresh cilantro to serve.

Workin’ Wednesdays: Lil’ Wayne and the Tax Man

I’m working on *another* funeral program. I’m becoming a go to person for that, so that’s good, but it’s also sad, because well … someone had to die.  In happier news, I’m designing the logo for Lil’ Wayne’s drummer, Keenan G. Ephriam. That should be fun! I was even able to link him with the best publicist on the planet — Sasha at Helio PR.

Manager-wise, I’m prepping Mooch’s taxes and doing bank reconciliations for her. I have to get thirty more of her headshots to her agent (15 theatrical and 15 commercial). Her resume is updated, but I really need to update her website and mine. I added an page about each of the family members under the “About” section, but things need revising and such (especially Hannibal’s page).

I’m working it out. It’s a lot! Especially since I’ve been going to bed between 9 and 10pm every night. That doesn’t leave much time in the day, but I’m well rested, though. :)

Tuesdays With Mooch: Just Witchin’ Around

Mooch is really thriving each morning with the command center. We’re still working on the evenings, because she talks a lot and she eats slowly. Her lunch often isn’t made until the morning, which isn’t the plan. Hey, at least she’s showering.

Her classes at William Grant Still Center begin this week, so we’re excited about that. She’ll be doing keyboard, voice, Shakespeare in the City, and art. It’s only a nine week program, but if she likes any of them enough, we’ll continue them at a paid program, I guess. This is just a free sampling.

She’s also finding new hobbies during her punishment — like face painting.  I walked out to this last Sunday:

Fuss’ classroom closet just got an overhaul. It looks great! My hallway doesn’t, though. :-/ I’m throwing/giving a lot of things that are developmentally inappropriate away since I’m not spawning anymore young ones. I further organized all of the supplies and left tons of room for new stuff, so it doesn’t get too jam packed.

The pouring activity finally returned to the shelves this week, so she was thrilled about that. She was so excited that she accidentally spilled lentils all over the place. She cleaned them up. I moved the alphabetized small objects out of the closet and into the classroom and told her that now that she knows all of her letters, she can pull a couple of sandpaper letters down and carry the corresponding drawers to her mat. She likes having that access.

Also on our shelves: the number five with manipulative, a geometric puzzle, the pink tower, cutting with scissors (she won’t let that one go :) ), one-to-one correspondence, and a couple of animal puzzles. Oh, I changed our calendar area a couple of weeks ago. Here’s a picture of that. I may return to the felt, though, because it was easier for *her* to put the dates up all by herself.
