Workin’ Wednesdays: DJ Smiles Davis

June 22, 2011 · Posted in dance, design, graphic design, workin' wednesdays · Comment

I recently had the opportunity to work with DJ Smiles Davis on the redesign of her website.  She was a pleasure to work with, and it is always wonderful to meet a fellow artist.  During the process of working on her site, I grew to enjoy her mixes — often designing with them playing in the background.

Some people would be satisfied having major accomplishments in one artistic field. Many people train their entire lives and never achieve that. DJ Smiles Davis, however, is not “some people,” and is well into her second successful career, providing the sonic backdrop for musical superstars like Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Mayer Hawthorne and Questlove.

She began her professional life with her feet, not her hands. As a company member with the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, she became such a sought after talent that she also served as a movement coach for multiplatinum artist Lauryn Hill and a back up dancer for both Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot.

An injury stood as an obstacle in her dance career, and part of her rehabilitation led her to discover her love for turntables. As a dancer, she’d always had an intense relationship with music, but becoming the one to control the groove instead of riding and interpreting it offered her a new avenue for expression.

The music inspired the look and feel of the design, and Smiles was pleased with the outcome.

Workin’ Wednesdays: Qui 2 Your Heart

Qui 2 Your Heart Photography approached Suuru Design Company for a logo last month. While unsure of a color scheme, the photography company did have font preferences. “We want something edgy, but we still want to appeal to couples getting married and such.”

We wanted to create something simple and timeless that could be used as a Twitter Icon, Gravatar, and Facebook icon. Suuru then incorporated that with typography for identification. Here’s what we came up with:

Thematic Thursdays: Recent Projects

I have a blog about Monsanto in the chamber, but the research I’m doing for it is holding it up. In the meantime, I thought I’d update you on what I’ve been working on over here, since Workin’ Wednesdays is no more. I’ve been thinking about bringing that back. *shrug*

Anyway, here are some recent projects:

Workin’ Wednesdays: Pretty Pooped

December 8, 2010 · Posted in graphic design, workin' wednesdays · Comment

My work for the last couple of weeks has included lots of holiday cards, a couple of logos and a ton of administrative work for the conference I’m helping with. People are registering big time, and many of them are registering groups. This can get complicated with the Eventbrite online software that I’m using and with people not wanting to pay the additional fees incurred with it. Speaking of fees, I have some invoicing to do.

I think I’m handling it quite well. Traveling is stressful enough for people, so I don’t want them worried about registration errors when they get here. Much of my recent work has been calming people down. When they seem really frustrated, I just let them register off line and send a money order the old-fashioned way. Where’s the harm, right?

Anyway, in other work news, I’m planning both my family’s Kwanzaa celebration and Mooch’s Rites of Passage ceremony (July), and I’m still chauffeuring her to auditions and call backs. I’m pretty pooped. This week, we opted to revisit using brown noise during Fuss’ nighttime sleeping to see if we could remove this one last midnight wakeup. Tonight is the first night. We’ll see what happens.

Both of us are pretty worn out, so we also decided an earlier bedtime for ourselves was necessary. Good night! Well, it’ll probably be good morning when you read it. :)

Workin’ Wednesdays: IABD 2011 Logo … Maybe

I’m not sure if this will be the official 2011 IABD logo yet, because the team is still deciding on it.  I like it, but that’s probably because I designed it. *chuckle*
