Tuesdays With Mooch: First Day of School
If you don’t feel like reading, you can watch the video of the first day of school.
We could hardly make out the silhouette of our car through the dense fog that morning. The rhinestone peace sign on Mooch’s bright pink shirt glistened as she fastened her seat belt. While we rode down Olympic, her tiny fingers were wrapped around her lunchbox handle the way my reluctance was clutching her youth.
With each glance in the rearview mirror, I noticed her taking in the scenery. Every milestone we drove by made it’s imprint in her perceptive mind — the 76 station at La Cienega, the tall buildings near Avenue of the Stars and the Water Garden at Olympic and Cloverfield. She hardly uttered a word the entire drive, and I’m almost certain her baby sister fell asleep.
The most difficult thing about the day was finding a parking space with no meter. We had to be there until noon. She’d be in class and I’d be in meetings, so I didn’t want to end up dragging the baby out to feed the meter every hour. Seventeen minutes before the bell was scheduled to ring, I pulled into a spot where I didn’t need a single coin or permit.
I pushed the stroller down the block to Mooch’s new school. She held onto the side of it looking around. A diverse medium-sized crowd gathered just outside of the schools main gate buzzing with conversations, laughter and excitement. Some students ran and embraced. Others clung to the gate peering into the empty lot. There were cameras everywhere including mine. I had both video and still on deck. I took pictures of Mooch, Fuss, the crowd and the school.
A single bubble floated over the fence, and the congregation roared in anticipation of what was to come. Lens caps fell, jaws dropped and Mooch’s eyes were wide with wonder. She looked up and noticed her principal beginning the countdown. We all joined in with a thunderous “Eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two …” At one, the old fashioned school bell rang, and Mooch entered the next phase of her life.
