Tuesdays With Mooch: First Homework Assignment

October 5, 2010 · Posted in marriage, Parenting, tuesdays with mooch · Comment

Well, sort of. Since Mooch was home-schooled most of her life, all of her work was “homework.” We were still excited yesterday when she brought home her first actual homework assignment. There were actually four assignments, but they aren’t due until Friday.

She has a reading chart, of course. It seems most schools have implemented this sort of thing, because apparently American people won’t read to their kids unless you put a gun to their heads … or a piece of paper with a calendar on it. We’ve read to her at bedtime since birth, so that part shouldn’t be a problem.

She also has to locate a place to do her homework each night and write about why she chose it and what conditions make it suitable. Given this blank space at the top of the paper, I suppose they want her to draw a picture of the designated homework location here. Oh, yes, it actually says that on the instructions.

Anyway, then there’s the tricky stuff — counting money, telling time and finding connections in the math all around us. It should be fine. She learned to tell time before I allowed her to get a Carebears face watch. I didn’t understand the point of her having one if she couldn’t read the darn thing. I was a little worried at the dinner table when she admitted, “I don’t really remember how much a nickel is.” Hey, kids forget. I’m not mad. We’ll review and all will be well.

I have a headache the size of Texas, so here’s the bento of the week:

Zucchini, carrots, brown rice, broccoli, hummus, grapes, water

Film Fridays: I Hate Pennies!

I hate finding them in the corners of drawers with hair gel and sesame seeds stuck to them.  I fuss at Hannibal for dumping them on the bookshelf or contaminating Mooch’s piggy bank with them!  I can’t stand pennies, and this guy does a really good job of summing up why. Watch.

Workin’ Wednesdays: It’s Our Anniversary

Two clients, who shall remain unnamed, came to Suuru with an old photo of their parents that needed to be restored. They also wanted to use the photo as a gift for their parents’ 35th wedding anniversary.  It was a little cracked up, but I promised to see what I could do.  ”Be as creative as you want” they said, explaining that they wanted the final design to hang up in their parent’s living room.

I provided them with four design options.  Here are the final two, and they chose the second one.

Tuesdays with Mooch: The Engineer

Last Saturday, Hannibal had to do his usual Wednesday comic reviews, because whenever there’s a holiday that falls on a Monday, comics don’t ship until Thursday. The family often does lots of stuff together on Saturday, and Mooch and I weren’t going to let Hannibal’s absence stop us. We went to build robots!

In both Glendale and Del Amo there’s a store called Rolling Robots. Not only can visitors buy and build robots, there is also a large area in the center where kids and adults can score big in the world’s only robot battle game. The remote controlled robots have shields and blunt weapons, and a player’s goal is to beat other players at racing to the scanner with the flashing lights. There are four scanners that light up randomly. My offense was on point! I scored 17 times my first game and was invited to a tournament that I didn’t attend. You won’t catch me on a Thursday night in Glendale battling eleven year old boys for some android title.

We bought the Smart Robot and carried it home to build.  We ended up building it this past Saturday night.  Each of us added a name to it — Kirby Agaga Floyd Boston is the robot’s name.  Mooch picked the first name (Kirby), Fuss added Agaga, Hannibal chose the second middle name (Floyd) and I brought it in with the last name (Boston).  Anyway, Mooch and I had a blast, and Fuss gummed a few automaton parts, too!

Here are the pics …
